Abstract

1375211 Supply circuits for electron guns GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 28 Jan 1972 [29 Jan 1971] 3481/71 Heading H2H A glow discharge electron gun 1 is supplied by a circuit comprising a capacitance C in series with an inductance L2, so that in the event of an arc discharge occurring in the gun, the capacitor discharges to momentarily reverse the voltage applied to the gun thereby extinguishing the arc discharge. In normal operation, a D.C. supply circuit 6 causes a glow discharge between the cathode 3 and anode 4 of the gun, ions from the discharge bombarding the cathode which emits an electron beam 12 for heating a target 8 in an argon filled enclosure 2. When an arc discharge occurs between the cathode and anode the capacitor C, the capacitance of which is much greater than the self capacitance of the gun, discharges and undergoes damped resonance with the inductor L2 so that the anode 4 becomes negative with respect to the cathode thereby extinguishing the arc. The cathode is therefore protected against excessive arc current.
