1374717 Electro-physical measurementmoisture LIGGET & MYERS Inc 24 Nov 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 54463/72 Heading G1N The moisture content of tobacco is measured by inserting a pair of electrodes and measuring the current in phase with the applied voltage. As shown Fig. 1 the electrodes comprise stainless steel spikes 20 about a foot long, mounted on a gantry 14 with pneumatic actuators 18 whereby they can be forced through the walls of a hogshead into the tobacco. Photo-electric detectors 13 at the base of the gantry indicate when a hogshead is properly positioned. As shown in Fig. 2 the probes 20 are energized from an oscillator 50 through one of a range of series resistors Rs. The resulting I.R. drop is applied to a phase-sensitive detector 70 feeding a logarithmic converter 80 with an indicating meter 90. A more detailed circuit diagram is given in Fig. 3 (not shown) using a square wave oscillator (55) feeding an amplifier (A 1 ) with a feedback network (60) to generate sine waves. No advantage is suggested for this arrangement.
