Abstract

1374537 Set gypsum BAYER AG 2 March 1972 [3 March 1971] 9732/72 Headings C1A and C1H The properties of set gypsum are improved by the addition of colloidal silica to the gypsum while it is being stirred with water. The colloidal silica may be added in a quantity of from 0À1% to 30% by weight based on calcium sulphate and may be added in the form of an aqueous silica sol. containing up to 60% by weight SiO2 and of B.E.T. surface area of 80 to 600 m.<2>/g. which may be modified by the addition of amphoteric metal hydroxides. Other additives may be added to the gypsum during processing, e.g. setting retarders or accelerators and leaning agents such. as sand, perlite or synthetic resin beads and other sound and heat insulating material. The process of the invention may be used in the production of expanded or foamed gypsum products, e.g. flooring and wallboards.
