Abstract

1373786 Modulating light EASTMAN KODAK CO 14 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970 (2)] 47866/71 Heading H4F [Also in Division G2] A projected image, such as one produced by illumination of a photographic transparency, is reduced in contrast either by passage through an imagewise mask, formed in a nematic liquid crystal layer 130 located with a transparent photoconductive layer 132 between two transparent electrodes 126, 128, or by passage of illuminating light through such a mask before it reaches the transparency. A D.C. potential is applied between the electrodes, and passage of light through the photo-conductive layer causes it to become conductive locally. Parts of the liquid crystal layer adjacent such conductive portions are changed to a milky white lightdiffusing material under the influence of the D.C. field so placed across them, and form a mask. The projected image, or illuminating light, may pass through either the photoconductive layer or the liquid crystal layer first, and a light source, a photographic transparency, a masking assembly and a sheet of photographic paper may be arranged in sequence. Alternatively a masking assembly S<SP>1</SP> may be located between a light source 102 and a transparency 110 which is to be projected, and may be imaged by passage of light from a second source 124, so directed by a beam splitter 116 and the objective lens 114 of projector P<SP>1</SP> that it passes through the transparency in the opposite direction to that from the source 102. After projection, the imagewise mask is erased by an A.C. potential from A.C. source 135. Suitable liquid crystal materials are N-(p-methoxybenzylibene)-p-butylaniline and a mixture of that substance with chloresteryl oleyl carbonate. The electrodes may be NESA glass, and the photoconductive material may be 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diethylamino-2,21-dimethyltriphenol methane and a polycarbonate resin together with a pyylium dye. A layer of cellulose nitrate, one micron or less. in thickness, may separate the liquid crystal layer from the photoconductive layer, which may suitably be 12 microns and 10 microns in respective thickness.
