Abstract
1373774 Sb/Ti oxide sols. E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 29 Nov 1971 [30 Nov 1970] 55219/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] Antimony trioxide sols. are prepared by reacting antimony trichloride with water and ammonia in a solution of a polar organic liquid, preferably dimethylformamide, and filtering off the ammonium chloride precipitated. Some residual chloride anion is left in the sol. to stabilize the latter; or it can be replaced by a different stabilizing anion such as formate, acetate, hydroxyacetate, salicylate or phthalate. A content of titanium dioxide (derived from reaction of titanium tetrachloride) may also be included in the sols. Sols. of antimony trioxide or antimony pentoxide can also be stabilized with alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acids having 2 to 6 carbon atoms. The sols. are used for rendering polymeric materials flame-retardant (see Division C3).
