Abstract

1373622 Disc brakes GENERAL MOTORS CORP 3 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972 (3)] 36979/73 Heading F2E In a sliding caliper disc brake the caliper 16 has a brake cylinder 62 secured to it and a mounting plate 50 is secured to the caliper and cylinder and extends laterally beyond the cylinder to be axially aligned with the ends of a brake pad backing plate 86, the latter being provided with bushing assemblies 98, 100 having resilient bushes 106, a pair of pins 54 being secured to a fixed carrier 14 and passing through the bushes 106 and mounting plate to slidably and resiliently support the caliper on the carrier. As shown, each bushing assembly comprises an annular bushing 104 press fitted into a boss 102 extending from the mounting end 96 of the brake pad backing plate 86 the bush 106 being elastomeric and fitted within a groove 108 of bushing 104. Alternatively, the bushing assembly may comprise an annular retainer 144, Figs. 4, 5, 6 (not shown), and an elastomeric bushing (146) fitting into an inwardly opening groove (148) formed on one end of the retainer. (The other end of the retainer is formed as an axially opening groove (152) the outer edge (154) of which engages the side of the backing plate. A centre body section (150) of the retainer is formed with resilient fingers (156), (158), (160) which are radially movable to permit snap installation and removal of the bushing assembly. In a further construction the bushing has a circumferentially uninterrupted cylindrical centre section and semiporous 212, Fig. 7 (not shown). The caliper 16 has edge surfaces 36, 38 engaging surfaces 40, 42 of the carrier support arms 24, 26 to transmit torque thereto and is secured to the cylinder 62 by means of a retainer 66 which fits in a passage 74, formed by radially aligned grooves 70, 72, and a passage 76 in the caliper leg 34 which tangentially intersects passage 74. The retainer 66 may be made from fluorocarbons, such as nylon, polypropylene, polyethylene, vinyl chloride polymers, elastomerics and spring wire. Pins 54 are retained in frame 28 by screwthreading and pass through elastomeric bushings 116, 118 provided in bushing assemblies 114,116 in the mounting plate 50 and nuts 120, 122 of the pins are resiliently supported in the bushings. Pad 44 has bosses located in recesses 92 of the caliper leg 32 for support by the caliper. Mounting plate 50 has an aperture 78 through which cylinder 62 is received the latter having a shoulder 80 engaging one side of the mounting plate the other side of which engages the outer surface of the other leg 34 of the caliper. A lug 84 on the cylinder fits in a mating portion of the aperture 78 to prevent circumferential movement of the mounting plate relative to the cylinder 62. The disc brake may be actuated by a piston 126 or mechanically through a lever 58 and pin 60. A stack adjuster 56 is provided.
