Abstract

1373514 Supporting magnetic heads SPERRY RAND CORP 15 Dec 1971 [17 Dec 1970] 58286/71 Heading G5R A flying head 15 is movable between landed and unlanded positions in relation to a magnetic record disc 10 by means of a cam 32, 34 having operating means 50, 52 which are biased by springs 56, 58 to the unlanded position, electrically-actuable latching means 74 being provided for holding the cam operating means 50, 52 in the landed position so that deactuation of the latching means (e.g. following a power failure) causes the head 15 to return to its unlanded position. As shown, retraction of the head assembly 14 from the discs 10 by a linear motor 28 causes a pin 102, which has been moved into operative position by a solenoid (108), Fig. 1 (not shown), to engage a cylindrical projection 52 on a bar 50 secured to the cam rods 32 so that cam surfaces 34, Fig. 3, on the rods 32 urge the magnetic heads 15A, 15B towards their respective magnetic discs 10. Operation of a solenoid (96), Fig. 1 (not shown), causes a sheathed cable 92 to rotate the latching means 74 against a spring 86 until an arm 80 enters a notch 120, Fig. 6, in the projection 52, thus holding the heads 15A, 15B in their landed positions.
