Abstract
1373025 Spark gaps UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 4 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 55917/72 Headings H1D H1X [Also in Division H2] An electrical connector 10 for diverting electrical surges comprises a tubular housing 11, a first apertured wall 25 which, in conjunction with a second apertured wall 18 forms a discharge chamber 27, electrical conductors 19 extending through the apertures and sleeves 20 for insulating the conductors from the wall 18, the ends 21 of the sleeves being coplanar with an electrically conductive surface 34 of the wall 18. The connector is mounted on a body 35 in which apparatus to be protected is located. The ends of the connector are filled with plastics material 24 and potting material 30 such as silicone rubber, polysulphide or epoxy material. The sleeves are made of rutile, alumina, or barium titanate or they may comprise the anodized surface of an aluminium housing 11. The dielectric sleeves assist in diverting the arc due to a surge across the sleeve ends 21 and the conductive surface 34 to the housing 11. The wall 25 is made of borosilicate glass and ports 31 may be provided to relieve pressure in the chamber 27 during operation of the connector. The connector may be used at ambient or reduced pressures with air, neon, hydrogen, argon or mixtures thereof. The housing is made of stainless steel, aluminium, copper, or nickel and alloys thereof or it may be made of plastics material in which ease a conductive member connects the conductive wall 18 to the body 35.
