Abstract

E JEFFERSON and L CHRISTODOULOU 4 Feb 1972 [15 Jan 1971] 2071/71 Heading A4C A hand-held machine for use in removing skin and/or for removing surface scabs from potatoes or like vegetables comprises a body member, a powered rotary shaft 11 mounted within the body, and a cylindrical tool 15 connected to the rotary shaft so as to be driven thereby, said tool having a flat portion 16 which is exposed by the body member and whose longitudinal edges define cutting edges. The tool is provided with a cylindrical extension 17 and a gear wheel 18 on which a further tool 19 is mounted, which tool comprises a tapered portion of cruciform cross-sectional area to facilitate the removal of eyes from vegetables. A flexible drive cable 13 is attached to the opposite end of the rotary shaft 11, which cable is also attached to an output shaft 22 and a motor from whence the shaft 11 is powered. A helically coiled spring member 23, attached to a further shaft upon which is mounted a gear wheel which mates with wheel 18, is accommodated in a cylindrical recess of the body member. The recess has an entrance at one end adjacent the tool 15, and an extension at the other end on which may be fitted a pipe 24, for removal of debris during the skinning.
