1372920 Preparing pyrophosphorus derivatives IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 30502/72 Heading C2P An organophosphorus compound of the formula wherein each R is independently hydrocarbyl, heterocyclic, -OR<SP>1</SP> or -NR<SP>1</SP> 2 , or both R groups attached to the same P atom together form a group wherein each E is independently -O-, -S-, or -NR<SP>1</SP>- and Z is a bivalent hydrocarbon group such that the groups E are separated by not more than 3 carbon atoms, Q is O or S, a is 0 or 1 and R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrocarbyl group are obtained by reacting a compound wherein X is halogen with a urea derivative of the formula wherein R<SP>11</SP> is an alkyl group, the reaction being carried out in the presence of an acid acceptor compound, e.g. a tertiary amine. The reaction is preferably effected in an inert solvent, e.g. benzene and conveniently at 40-100‹ C. and under an inert atmosphere, e.g. of nitrogen. In an example octamethylpyrophosphoramide is obtained by reacting 2 moles of bis-(dimethylamino)chlorophosphine oxide with 1 mole of 1,3-dimethylurea in the presence of 2 moles of triethylamine, the reaction being carried out in benzene and in an atmosphere of nitrogen.
