Abstract

1364834 Amine salts of organophosphorus acids ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 8 Feb 1972 [12 March 1971] 6677/71 Heading C2P [Also in Division C5] An amine salt is obtained by reacting (A) a phosphorus-containing compound of the formula wherein X, Y and Z are R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>1</SP>O or R<SP>2</SP>O, where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 1 -C 25 hydrogen- and carbon-containing groups, with (B) an amine of the formula wherein R<SP>3</SP> is H or a C 1 -C 18 aliphatic (including cycloaliphatic group) and R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>7</SP> are the same or different and are hydrogen or C 1 to C 4 alkyl groups, Ar is an aromatic group and n is an integer from 2 to 8 inclusive. In preparing the salt the reactants are preferably mixed together in stoichiometric proportions in a suitable solvent, e.g. diethyl ether, and the mixture heated under reflux conditions. Specified compounds (A) are di-n-butyl phosphate, mono-nbutyl phosphate and di-n-butyl phosphinate and the preferred amine is 2-phenyl ethylamine. The 2-phenyl ethylamine salt of di-n-butyl phosphate is specifically referred to. The products are useful as additives for lubricants.
