Abstract
1372828 Vent for multi-cell storage batteries GLOBE-UNION Inc 20 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 13365/73 Heading H1B A vent assembly 10 for attachment to the filling ports 34 of a multi-cell storage battery cover 33 permitting the escape of gases through a porous diffuser element 23, e.g. of ceramic, whilst preventing the escape of electrolyte, comprises a cover 15 and a base 12 with sidewalls 13 which are sealed to each other to form a hollow body. The diffuser element 23 is retained in a compartment formed by walls 14 on the base 12. The floor 22 of the base 12 is gabled, having baffles 16 at the gable peaks and openings 18a, 18b, 18c in the depressions. Annular members 35 around the openings 18 plug into the opening ports 34. The base 12 also has curved baffles 17 and the cover 33 has baffles 28, 29. A chamber 36 defined by a lower floor 31 beneath the element 23 connects with the atmosphere through a narrow slot-shaped opening 26 in the floor 31. The gas to be vented reaches the upper surface of the element 23 by passing through the gaps formed by the baffles whilst the electrolyte is obstructed. The small area of the opening 26 permits any ignition of gases in the chamber 36 to cause rapid expansion of the gas whereby the flame is extinguished.
