Abstract
1371763 Pulse generators JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 14 Jan 1972 [10 Feb 1971] 4346/71 Heading G1A In a pulse generator unit suitable for controlling an internal combustion engine, an interrupter wheel 14 within a housing 10 is connected to a shaft 13 that may be rotated by the engine and has two axially spaced bands (15, 16), Fig. 3 (not shown) having alternate transparent and opaque areas the arrangement being such that rotation of the wheel 14 will interrupt light passing from sources 18 and 19 to photo-cells 21, 22 (all of which are attached to the housing 10) and light from a light source 20 passing to photo-cell 17 (both of which are attached to a stator 12 that is pivotable with respect to the housing). The photo-cells 17 and 19 both receive light that has passed through the same band (15) and the phase relationship between the trains of pulses produced by the two photo-cells depends upon the angular position of the stator (which may be connected to the throttle) relative to the housing. The photo-cell 18 receives light that has passed through the band 16. The number of opaque parts in the band 15 may be equal to the number of cylinders in the internal combustion engine, where as the band 16 may have a substantially greater number and the outputs of the three photo-cells may be connected to a grating circuit which is arranged to "gate" the output of the photo-cell 18 to an electronic counter, for controlling fuel injection, when an output is provided by the photo-cells 17 and 19 Figs. 4d and 4e (not shown). Other uses for the pulses produced by the generator are disclosed, concerning speed measurement, or providing a pre-set pulse for ignition signalling. A further photo-cell (not shown) may be used to provide a single pulse per revolution of the interrupter wheel 14 for signalling the start of each engine cycle, furthermore the band may be replaced by other light modulating means such as those using reflection or refraction.
