Abstract

1371720 Measuring pressure electrically SNAM PROGETTI SpA 27 Oct 1972 [11 Nov 1971] 49772/72 Heading G1N In an I.C. engine having a cylinder block 2 and a head 3 fixed to the block by fixing means under tension, a device 11, capable of emitting a signal or varying an emitted signal in accordance with variation in the pressure to which it is subjected, is held in position in a state of compression by one of the fixing means, the arrangement being such that variation in pressure in the combustion chamber(s) causes variation in tension of the fixing means and hence variation in the pressure to which the device is subjected. As shown, the fixing means comprise a plurality of nuts 9 arranged on stud bolts 10 secured to the block. The device 11 consists of a transducer, e.g. of the Piezo-electric type, in the form of a washer of the same size as the washers (not shown) arranged on the other bolts. Alternatively, the transducer may be in the form of a dynamometric nut or any other device capable of detecting the clamping conditions of the head to the block. The transducer is shown connected to an amplifier 12 whose output is connected to an oscilloscope 13, a recorder 14, and a meter 15. More than one transducer may be provided. Monitoring of the pressure in the cylinder(s) enables detection of anomalous combustion phenomena e.g. detonation, knocking, preignition, misfiring, after running and cyclic dispersion.
