1371501 Inserting fasteners MONARCH MARKING SYSTEMS INC 14 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970 (2)] 42886/71 Heading D1G A device for use in attaching tags 23 to material 24 e.g. a garment comprises a needle 76 for penetrating the tag and material, a pivoted trigger 35 which when depressed causes anticlockwise movement of lever 36 about its pivot 32, and consequential movement towards the needle of slides 49 and 62, channel means for receiving a fastener assembly 22, a drive rod 55, for driving a fastener through a bore 78 at the rear end of the needle and through the tag and material, connected to the slide 49, and a ratchet mechanism operable by movement of the slide 62 to effect indexing of the assembly after a fastener has been driven to bring the next fastener into the driving position. The fastener assembly 22 comprises a connector bar 22' to which each of a plurality of fasteners 21 are connected by elements 28. Each fastener comprises a filament 27, a bar 25 extending transversely, and at one end, of the filament and an enlarged portion 26 at the other end of the filament. The needle 76 has an enlarged rear portion 80 (Fig. 9) which is received in a bore 99 in the body of the device. A rack 100 on the portion 80 engages with teeth on a pinion 101 when the needle is inserted into the bore and rotation of knob 108 secured to the pin from the limit position of Fig. 9 to that of Fig. 8 will move the needle into its fully inserted position. In the latter position projection 107' (Fig. 7) on the knob will be urged into recess 109 by bias of spring 106'. When removal of the needle is required pressure applied to shaft section 105 will move the pinion and knob against bias of spring 106' to release the projection from the recess, and the knob is then rotated to its Fig. 9 position. A slot 82 communicating with the bore permits passage of the filament of each fastener therealong during driving. A second slot 84 permits entry of part of the bar of each fastener into the bore 78. During driving the rear end of the portion 80 severs the fastener being driven from its connecting element 28. The ratchet mechanism comprises a ratchet wheel 70 integral with a fastener assembly feed wheel 73. During forward motion of the slide 62 the pawl 68 is moved forwardly by contact between the rear end of slot 67 and a projection 72 on the pawl. Movement of the wheels during this motion is prevented by spring member 93 (Fig. 3 not shown). During the -return motion of the slide the forward end of slot 67 will engage the projection 72 to move it and the wheels a distance equivalent to the spacing between two fasteners. Apart from springs 41, 106' and part 94 including spring member 93 and a spring member 71 biassing the pawl 68 towards the wheels, the needle 76 and the disc rod 55, the device is made of plastics material.
