Abstract
1371351 Loading and unloading ships; mooring R H DAVIES 12 April 1972 [29 March 1971 2 Feb 1972] 8046/71 and 4994/72 Headings B7A and B7S [Also in Divisions F2 and B8] A marine loading and unloading system for transferring fluid cargoes between a seabed pipe-line and a ship comprises a seabed to surface conduit which includes a universal joint connecting rigid pipe lengths. The universal joint allows relative movement of the pipe lengths about one, two or all of three orthogonal axes meeting at a single point. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the seabed to surface conduit 1 is connected to a mooring buoy 2 by a universal joint 4 and comprises two sections 5 joined by a universal joint 6. The lower end of the conduit 1 is connected through horizontal and vertical swivel joints 27, 28 to a conduit 8 secured to an anchor 11. An adjustable conduit 9 connects with the seabed line 10. The buoy 2 is secured to the anchor 11 by chains 7 which are shorter than the conduit 1 when it is fully extended so that the conduit remains free of strain. The universal joints 4 and 6 are made up of swivel joints similar to the joints 27 and 28. As illustrated in Fig. 7, an articulated pipeline 52 connects a seabed pipe-line 50 to a retrieval buoy 53. The pipe-line can pivot about horizontal and vertical axes at an anchor 51. The pipe-line is supported by floats 70 and includes swivel joints 68 and universal joints 69. The retrieval buoy 53 comprises a polyurethane float 77 and a buoyancy chamber 78 which is normally flooded. The chamber 78 can be pumped out from a tanker so that the retrieval buoy is raised for connection to the tanker. A tanker pipe-line on an extensible boom is bolted to a connector 80 thereafter valves in the connector and the tanker pipe-line are opened. Swivel joints 81 and 82 are included in the retrieval buoy. The tanker is moored to the seabed anchor by a pair of mooring lines bearing marker buoys 97. When not in use, the free ends of the mooring lines are located by a mooring line buoy and a sea drogue, Fig. 18 (not shown).
