Abstract

1371250 Character recognition systems ARTHUR KLEMT KG 21 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 18679/72 Heading G4R A character to be recognized is scanned by an array of photo-cells whose outputs are connected to resistor networks. The character field is regarded as being divided into a rectangular matrix of n x m elementary areas. The resistor networks receive signals from 9 groups of areas arranged as a 3 x 3 matrix. In the case of 6 x 3 areas, each signal represents the sum of the intensity of the light received from a respective pair of the elementary areas. Thus group A corresponds to areas 1 and 4, group B to areas 2 and 5, &c. The pairs of areas may be viewed by 9 respective light guides whose entry faces are shaped to view the respective areas, their exit faces being directed to corresponding photocells. Alternatively the photo-cells themselves may be so shaped that each views two areas, or each area may be viewed by a respective photocell, pairs of cells being connected in parallel to provide the 9 signals to the recognition circuits. Because of the effective size of the groups of areas A-J the system is tolerant to off-centred characters, Fig. 6 (not shown).
