1371038 Preparing 1 - aminoalkane - 1,1- diphosphonic acids HENKEL & CIE GmbH 5 Oct 1971 [6 Oct 1970] 46206/71 Heading C2P Diphosphonic acids of the general formula in which R is H, C 1 -C 12 alkyl, a cycloaliphatic group, phenyl, C 7 -C 12 phenylalkyl, pyridyl or carboxyalkyl and may be substituted or further substituted, X is NH 2 or NR 1 R 2 where R 1 and R 2 are C 1 -C 4 alkyl or R 1 and R 2 form a hydrocarbon chain which together with the N atom forms a heterocyclic ring which may optionally contain a further heteroatom are obtained by reacting phosphorous acid with an amide dichloride or dibromide: R<SP>1</SP>CCl 2 X or R<SP>1</SP>CBr 2 X where R<SP>1</SP> is the same as R except that when R is carboxyalkyl R<SP>1</SP> is carbalkoxyalkyl. Specified optional substituents for R and R<SP>1</SP> are alkyl and phenyl (when R<SP>1</SP> is cycloaliphatic) or NO 2 , dialkyl amino, alkoxy and carbalkoxy groups. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. CCl 4 , dimethyl formamide, or diethyl ether. The reaction mixture is usually treated with water when the main reaction is complete and water-soluble products of the reaction may then be precipitated by adding a solvent such as acetone, methanol, ethanol or isopropanol. The products are useful for softening water, in bottle washing, for removing deposits from fabrics during washing, and as additives to dyebaths for textiles. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,267,016.
