Abstract

1370951 Lactam manufacture CHEMIEBAU DR A ZIEREN GmbH & CO KG 3 Jan 1972 [18 June 1971] 109/72 Heading C2C Lactams are manufactured from cycloalkanone-oximes (which are preferably made by reaction of cycloalkalones with hydroxylamine sulphate followed by neutralization with ammonia) by rearrangement with sulphuric acid, the mixture is neutralized with ammonia, the lactam and ammonium sulphate are separated, and the ammonium sulphate formed in the rearrangement and/or in the oximation is then burnt, in a solid, finely divided form, at from 850‹ C. to 1,250‹ C. to form SO 2 which is reacted by contact oxidation at 400 to 600‹ C. and absorption to give sulphuric acid which is recycled to the rearrangement stage. In a preferred embodiment part of the SO 2 formed by combustion of the ammonium sulphate may be used in the manufacture of hydroxylamine sulphate. The preparation of #-caprolactam from cyclohexanone-oxime is described.
