1370835 Latches N T LOCKS Ltd 1 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 12528/72 Heading E2A A mortise-type door or window fastening comprises a latching lever 17 pivoted at 18 to an operating lever 19 and connected, with lost-motion 15, 16, to a mounting plate 11 which has a slot 21 guiding a pin 20 on the operating lever such that the other end of the lever moves in an L-shaped latching slot 23 as the latching lever moves. A spring 24 normally holds the lower end of the operating lever in the latch-fastening position shown in Fig. 1, but rotation of follower 25 by lock 12 moves the pin 22 which engages in the slot 23 to move the operating lever down to the releasing position, Fig. 2, against the spring, and up to the fastening position again. Alternatively, if the door &c is slammed with the latch in its fastening position, Fig. 1, the latching lever 17 slides back into lost-motion 15, 16, rotating the lever 19 counterclockwise to displace the lower end of the lever against spring 24 along the horizontal part of latching slot 23 to release the lever 17 for downward, releasing movement. The carrier 11 is pivoted about the lock body and its position is adjusted by screw 13. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the follower 25 is replaced by a sliding element controlled by a rack and pinion.
