Abstract
1370570 Cooling towers NOKIA AB OY 20 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 18363/72 Heading F4K [Also in Division B1] In a gas-liquid contacting tower, e.g. cooling tower, wherein films of liquid flowing downwardly through a fill or packing comprising a plurality of parallel side-by-side tubular passages 1 are cooled by contact with upwardly flowing gas, the liquid is distributed to the upper ends of the passages by means of a liquid distribution device comprising a cover 2 having a plurality of sleeves 3, one for each tubular passage, extending downwardly therefrom. The upper ends of the passage walls have frustoconical surfaces 7 which co-operate with small protuberances 9 on the outer surfaces of the sleeves 3 to define slots 8 through which liquid entering through an inlet 5 into the spaces 4 between the sleeves 3 flows. A circumferential groove 10 in the wall of each passage 1 ensures even distribution of liquid within the passage. The cover is attached at its periphery to the top of the packing by means of resilient fluid tight bellows 11. The packing may comprise tubular elements of circular cross-section with the spaces between adjacent elements being filled with a fluid impermeable medium, or the elements may be of hexagonal cross-section so as to fit together without spaces therebetween. Alternatively the passages may be formed as parallel bores in a unitary block.
