Abstract

1370522 Bearings N LAING I LAING and L LUDIN 7 March 1972 [16 March 1971] 10569/72 Heading F2A A bearing assembly having two co-operating surfaces which are surfaces of revolution has one of the surfaces formed in a compliant bearing element 4 which defines one boundary of a cavity 7 in which fluid may be pressurized to urge the surface in the compliant element to- wards the other surface. The bearing may be a self pressurizing fluid bearing and the element may be formed so that the cavity communicates with the bearing clearance so that the fluid in the cavity is pressurized by the bearing. The communication may be directly via a hole 5 in the element or indirectly via a membrane formed in part of the element or by fluid from the bearing deforming a portion of the cavity which is formed as a sealed cavity filled with incompressible fluid. In cases where the bearing is self-pressurizing (e.g. with spiral grooves 9 in one surface) means may be provided for facilitating rotation at low speeds, for example the lands of the grooved surface may be sprayed or platted with rhodium in which is embedded a suitable carbide, nitride or oxide. The bearing may be arranged so that this grooved surface co-operates with an element 3 having a surface of similar material, on starting and stopping of rotation while during normal running load is only transmitted via the compliant bearing element.
