Abstract

1370383 Gettering NUCLEAR BATTERY CORP 18 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 52156/73 Heading H1D The disclosure is identical to that of Specification 1,370,382 (see Division G6), but the claims are directed to a getter and process for activating the same. The getter, which comprises a pellet of porous barium, is placed in a perforated can and maintained in an inert atmosphere prior to placing in a vacuum and heating to about 800‹ F. for about 2 hours to outgas and activate the pellet. The can may be of tantalum (or an alloy thereof) or aluminium, titanium, stainless steel or alloys thereof. The getter 40 is used in a nuclear-fueled thermoelectric generator, and is arranged relative to a fuel assembly 50 and thermopile 60 such that the getter is maintained at a temperature higher than that of the hot end of the thermopile. Two alternative dispositions of the getter 40 are shown and described. Specifications 1,370,384, 1,370,385 and 1,370,386 are mentioned.
