Abstract

1369565 Glass fibre manufacture JOHNSMANVILLE CORP 30 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 25193/72 Heading C1M [Also in Division F4] A burner, particularly for producing a high energy gaseous blast for use in forming glass fibres from glass filaments, comprises a metallic plenum chamber 26, a metallic primary combustion chamber 32 extending into chamber 26 and having at least one set of opposing fuel-air mixture permeable walls for passing the mixture received from pipe 12 via chamber 26 into chamber 32, the combustion chamber 32 having an outlet having substantially the same crosssection as chamber 32 and leading to a metallic outlet nozzle 80 which has an outlet smaller than its inlet chamber 32 may be defined by rectangular parallel perforated plates 34 of 8À5% open area, end plates 36 and a back plate 38 indented into chamber 32 to act as a fluid distributer in plenum chamber 26. The apex of the indentation of plate 38 may become hot enough to cause preheating of the fuel/air mixture. In an alternative form, the primary combustion chamber 32 is made from sintered metal powder so that all its walls are permeable. A secondary combustion chamber 44 may be provided comprising a steel casing 50, insulation- 48 and a refractory liner 46. The combustion products are accelerated and shaped to the required stream profile by a rectangular nozzle 72 sealed to the downstream end of chamber 44 or chamber 32 by a gasket 78 and held in a shroud 82 by bosses 74 and stays 76 and centred by adjustable screws 96, such mounting allowing widthwise expansion of the nozzle when heated. Shroud 82 has refractory liners 90 defining with nozzle 72 converging ducts 94 through which cooling air is caused to pass from inlets 88 due to injector action by the combustion products leaving nozzle exit 14. The nozzle 72 may have cooling fins extending into ducts 94.
