Abstract

1369463 Video distribution systems PROCESS PERIPHERALS Ltd 8 Jan 1973 [23 Nov 1971] 54397/71 Heading H4R In a communication system in which a central station is connected by individual cable conductors to outer stations so as to transmit video information with line and frame sync intervals to raster-type displays, the outer stations respond to the incoming information to transmit data to the central station over the same distribution conductor during the frame or line sync interval. At each outer station the video sync signals are separated at 15 and fed to timing generator 16, control logic 24 and remixed at 30 with the separated video before passing to the display monitor. The timing generator 16 detects the first broad pulse of the sync signals, counts nine pulses from the second, then produces an output trigger pulse at the start of each of the following nine line periods corresponding to the flyback period over which data is to be transmitted back to the central station. A blanking signal is generated during this whole period and mixed with the video at 19 to prevent the data appearing at the monitor. The data is entered via keyboard 20 (or tape reader), stored 22, then transferred by byte to store 23 which is controlled by timing pulse generator 16 and keyboard strobe signal to gate the data to driver 25 and thence back along the line. The data is in the form of 1 start, 1 parity and seven bits as positive pulses of 45 sec. duration superposed on the 64 sec negative line sync pulses. The stations may include a facility to display the output of store 22. At the central station (Fig. 4, not shown) data from any of 64 outer stations is stored 41, interrogated to see if the first data line is new and read-out accordingly to a unit (44) having direct memory access to computer. Address signals from unit (45) identify the station involved, and the whole operation is controlled (43) by a logic unit (43) according to line sync (46). In a modification (Figs. 5a, 5b, not shown) the sync pulse (14) in the sync interval (13) is short (500 n sec.) but is extended at the outer stations for display and is used to gate the data down the line as above.
