Abstract

1369104 Detecting flaws electrolytically PFAUDLER-WERKE A G 27 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 49759/72 Heading G1N The invention relates to the detection of damage to the corrosion-preventing enamal lining of an iron container or pipe, including damage to repairs using inert metal coatings e.g. tantalum, or graphite. Instead of applying an external potential as in Specification 1228561, the damage is detected by the electrolytic potential between the iron container and a reference electrode immersed in the liquid in the container. The reference electrode may be a glass electrode or an Ag/AgCl electrode. A rugged Ag/AgCl electrode somewhat similar to that described in Specification 1304117, is illustrated in Fig.2. An Ag/AgCl patch 9 is mounted on an enamelled metal rod 6, and an "electrolytic diaphragm" 11 is enamelled integrally with the enamelled metal container 7. (The electrode is shown connected through voltmeter 5 to the boiler steel vessel 2.)
