Abstract

1368904 Mechanical switches AUTOMATIC SWITCH CO 9 Oct 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 46514/72 Heading H1N A by-pass and isolation switch comprises fixed contacts 56, 58 for connection to a supply and the load respectively, fixed contacts 59, 64 for connection to a transfer switch, movable contact 140 for connecting fixed contacts 56, 59, and movable contact 160 for connecting the load to either supply contact 56 or transfer switch contact 64. As shown, the switch also comprises a fixed contact 57 for connection to an alternative source of power, a fixed contact 60 for connection to the transfer switch and moving contact 159 for connecting fixed contacts 57, 60, moving contact 160 also being able to connect load contact 58 to the alternative power source contact 57. Moving contacts 140, 159 are connected by links 174, 177 to disc 167 on spindle 163, rotation of disc 167 moving contacts 140, 159. Moving contact 160 is on a spindle which carries a star-wheel 179 located in position by pins 190, 191 on members 188, 189 urged together by spring 192, and also carries a plate 181 carrying a pin 185 on which is pivoted a link 183 guided at its upper end between fixed pins 186, 187, and carrying a pin 184. In the switch position shown in Fig. 6, pin 184 rests on the periphery of disc 167 and as a result, moving contact 160 cannot be moved. Moving contacts 140, 159 can be moved by rotating spindle 163 and disc 167, and when they are moved to the closed position engaging fixed contacts 56, 57, a slot 176 in disc 167 cones opposite pin 184 so that moving contact 160 can be moved to engage fixed contacts 64, or 57, pin 184 entering slot 176 to permit movement of contact 160, as in Fig. 9 (not shown). Once pin 184 is in slot 176, disc 167 cannot be rotated so that contacts 140, 159 can only be moved if contact 160 engages either supply contact 56 or the alternative power source contact 57, pin 184 being out of slot 176 in both of those positions. Moving contacts 140, 159, 160 each consists of two plates urged together by springs to grip their respective fixed contacts.
