1368045 Cooling electric machines KRAFTWERK UNION AG 14 Feb 1973 [17 Feb 1972] 7368/73 Heading F4U [Also in Division H2] In an electrical machine, e.g. turbo-generator, having water-cooled stator and rotor windings 10, 12 and a shaft pump 7, the windings are connected in a water cooling circuit which further includes a cooling water connection head 5 surrounding the pump 7 and defining a cooling water inlet chamber 4 on one side of the pump and a cooling water outlet chamber 14 and a pressure-reducing water chamber 17 on the other side of the pump there being a sealing device 16 surrounding the machine shaft 6 and disposed between the latter chambers 14, 17 in order to minimize water leakage therebetween, a main cooling water container 1 connected between the inlet and outlet chambers 4, 14 and which in use of the machine is provided with an elevated pressure gas cushion 2, and an intermediate water container 19 which is directly connected to the pressure-reducing chamber 17 to receive therefrom water which has leaked past the sealing device 16 and is connected to the main water container 1 through a pump 28 and in which during such use is provided a gas cushion 20 which is at a pressure slightly higher than atmospheric but lower than that of main water container gas cushion 2. This circuit minimizes the leakage of water from the connection head 5 whilst permitting the use of simple sealing devices, e.g. those operating without physical contact. As shown, a cooling device 9 is interposed in the conduit 8 between the pump and windings, the water being fed to the rotor winding 16 through an axial bore 11 in the shaft 6. The gas cushion 2 is provided by a hydrogen supply conduit 29 and a pressure-reducing valve 30, and communicates via a further pressurereducing valve 31 with the gas cushion 20 whose pressure is limited by a safety valve 32. Water which leaks from the chamber 17 through a further sealing device 21 into a water chamber 22 and is oxygen enriched is fed by a return pump 25 from a collecting vessel 23 via an oxygenremoving device 26 containing a palladium catalyst back to the container 1.
