1367875 Colour cathode-ray tubes D M GOODMAN 9 Aug 1971 19599/74 Divided out of 1366344 Heading H1D In a photo-deposition method of making a colour cathode-ray tube screen, e.g. the beam indexing strips of a beam indexing type tube, a light source is used which comprises a primary source of radiation, such as an ultra-violet lamp 28, and a sheet of scintillator material 29 which is excited by the ultra-violet light to generate optical radiation which is internally reflected in the sheet and emerges from a relatively small exit region 30. A second sheet of sointillator material can surround the first so as to use radiation escaping from the first. In an alternative form, Fig. 8 (not shown), the scintillator is formed as a conical funnel with the exit region at the apex to provide a point source of light. The light source can be used in close contact with the screen as shown in Fig. 5, or it can be used in the position of a conventional light source 28a in conjunction with an optical master 60. A single light source can be used in successive positions across a screen or several sources can be arranged in an array to expose simultaneously a number of strips.
