Abstract

1367864 Railway stops JAPANESE NATIONAL RAILWAYS and KAYABAKOGYO KK 23 Jan 1973 [25 Jan 1972] 3366/73 Heading B7L A buffer stop which is retractable from an operative position (as shown) in which it engages and stops a freight car 12, to an inoperative position in which the mechanism is disposed in a pit 16, comprises an actuating arm 18 having an impact head 64 at its upper end, a pair of supporting arms 22 disposed one on each side of the arm 18 and pivotally connected thereto by a pin 34, each arm being mounted on a fixed pivot pin 40 in the pit 16 and the pin 34 being coupled by means of a connecting rod 32 to an hydraulic shock absorber 20 which provides the braking force necessary to stop the car 12 and the mounting of the actuating arm being such that during such braking the head 64 is in a straightline horizontal path. An actuating cylinder 24 is connected between a pin 52 on the lower end of the arm 18 and a pivotal mounting on a fixed bracket 44, the cylinder 24 being actuable to move the buffer stop between its operative and inoperative positions. The head 64 includes a spring or ribbon member to provide initial load absorbtion, and a parallel linkage of crank rods 76, 78 fixed to the pins 52, 62 respectively and joined by a connecting rod 84 maintains the impact receiving face of the head 64 vertical during movement of the arm 18 during braking of the car 12.
