Abstract
1367779 Alkaline dry cells GATES RUBBER CO 25 Oct 1971 [28 Oct 1970] 49394/71 Heading H1B In an alkaline cell of the starved electrolyte type, corrosion between the anode, having an electronegative potential more negative than hydrogen, e.g. zinc, and a contact surface within the cell, e.g. the inner surface of a steel cell casing, is prevented by coating the surface with cadmium or cadmium amalgam, which material has a high hydrogen over voltage, i.e. a material requiring a current density not greater than 10<SP>-4</SP> amp./cm.<SP>2</SP> to give it a cathodic voltage of about -1À2 volts. Figure 1 shows a sealed cell with the electrode assembly removed. The steel casing 10 has welded thereto a steel lug 18 to which is connected the zinc anode, a cadmium amalgam coating 20 being provided on the lug and casing surface. The cathode is connected to a lug 16 on the cover 12. Other anode materials mentioned are Mg, Fe, In. Cathode materials may be Ag, Ni.
