1367751 Non-woven fabric SOC NATIONALE DES POUDRES ET EXPLOSIFS 11 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 1580/73 Heading D1R [Also in Division B5] A rectangular sheet of high modules boron, carbon or silicon carbide refractory fibres aligned parallel at an angle α between 0 and 90 to two sides of the rectangle is produced by winding fibre in contiguous turns on a mandrel, each turn being in a plane substantially in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the mandrel, cutting the fibre layer to release it from the mandrel to produce a parallelogram with angles (90-α) and (90+α), cutting the parallelogram along a line perpendicular to the pair of side edges formed by the first cutting and re-arranging the two pieces to form the rectangle. The fibre or filament may be impregnated with a prepolymer before being wound upon the mandrel. Alternatively metal, e.g. aluminium, may be used as a binder matrix. Several sheets may be laminated together. The angle α at which the fibres are aligned to the longitudinal axis may vary from sheet to sheet. Some sheets may be turned through 180 so that the fibres make an angle -α with the axis.
