Abstract
1367673 Battery with flowing electrolyte JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 2 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 8219/71 Heading H1B A battery comprises a number of cells 10 each having a magnesium anode 11 surrounded by an air cathode 12, electrolyte from a common source being circulated through the cells and returning to the source. The electrolyte flow path includes an inlet manifold 14 and an outlet manifold 15 to which the cells 10 are connected by tubes 16. Air for the cathodes 12 is supplied by a line 13 and leaves through line 25. To prevent the formation of an electrically conducting path between the cells by the electrolyte, air bubbles are introduced into the manifolds 14, 15 through bleed lines 17, 18. The air bubbles are prevented from entering the cells by providing the tubes 16 with U-shaped portions 19, 20 and by hump-shaped portions 24 in the inlet manifold 14.
