Abstract
1367462 Hot pressed Si 3 N 4 DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 28 Oct 1971 [5 Nov 1970] 52641/70 Heading C7D A number of Si 3 N 4 compacts having at least one curved face are simultaneously formed in one hot pressing operation. The compacts are preferably formed as a block with adjacent compacts joined by a web which is removed by machining. The Si 3 N 4 powder is preferably mixed with MgO powder in a ratio of 20:1 v hot pressed at 1200 p.s.i. and 1850‹C. As shown in Fig.4 the mould 30 is fitted with powder charges 32 separated by graphite spacers 34, the charges and spacers alternating in the horizontal and vertical planes. Hot pressing is effected via tap and punch which has projections 38 and 40 contacting the top row of powder charges and spacers. The powder charges are preferably precompacted cold at 10-15 t.s.i. before charging the mould.
