Abstract
1367402 Magnesia production GOLD FIELDS MINING & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 21 April 1972 18687/72 Heading C1A A method of producing magnesia from a magnesium carbonate ore comprising: digesting the ore in a leach solution consisting of a stoichiometric excess of strong, hob sulphuric acid such that the dissolved magnesium concentration becomes greater than 60% of saturated concentration, neutralizing any excess acid with commercial grade magnesia under oxidizing conditions such that iron is precipitated as the hydroxide, separating the leach liquor from the remaining solids, crystallizing a magnesium salt from the liquor and calcining the salt to form magnesia. The digestion preferably occurs at a temperature of above 70‹ C. and crystallization can be brought about by spray drying or by a freezing process.
