Abstract

1367393 Sleeving for pipe-lines P J W ADDISON F J BROWN and T L HATTON 18 Jan 1973 [22 Jan 1972] 3121/72 Heading B8C A sleeve, for use in providing an outer cover about a pipe-line, comprises a part-cylindrical body portion 1 having an opening which extends the full length thereof with straight sides extendalong parallel generatrices of the cylinder, and a lid portion 2 adapted to fit into said opening to complete the cylindrical shape of the sleeve stiffening structure 3, 6 and 4, 5 being provided in both the body portion and the lid portion at locations spaced axially thereof to maintain them in their part-cylindrical form when the lid portion is separate from the body, and the stiffening structure being located adjacent the inside of the body and lid portions to leave a pipe-line receiving-space therein, the minimum cross-sectional dimension of the space being substantially equal to the width between the straight sides of said opening. As shown, the part-cylindrical portion 1, and the lid portion 2 have welded, to their interior surfaces, at spaced locations along their lengths, crescentshaped stiffening members 3, 4 respectively which have pipe-line supporting pads 5, 6. The latter may be exteriorly lined with electrical insulating material, alternatively, an insulating band, e.g. of rubber, may be located around the pipe-line adjacent each reinforcing structure. In order to manufacture a sleeve the stiffening structures 3, 6 and 4, 5 are first welded, at the appropriate positions, within a whole cylindrical tube, comprised, e.g. of steel covered with bitumen material, after which the lid portion 2 is cut from the body portion 1. In order to mount the sleeve over a pipe-line, not shown, the body portion 1, with its opening lowermost, is placed over the pipe-line and is then rotated so that its opening is uppermost and the lid portion 2 can be lowered into position to close the opening. The lid portion 2 can be welded in position, the weld material being retained by strips 8, Fig. 3. A series of sleeves, welded end-to-end, may be provided along a pipe-line, a bend in the pipeline being negotiated by cutting a sleeve into angled segments arranged in "lobster back" configuration.
