Abstract
1367204 Tuyeres; fuel atomizers INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE 7 Jan 1972 [20 Jan 1971] 741/72 Headings F5B and F4T Liquid fuel is fed into a tuyere 2, for example for heating a blast furnace, through a central movable body 6 and/or at the level of a sonic throat 4 of tuyere 2 and in order to maintain effective fuel atomization a supersonic shock wave is maintained in the outlet nozzle 5 by moving the body 6 in response to a detected difference between the pressure at the tuyere inlet of a comburant gas, supplied via conduit 1, and a reference pressure which, it is known, will, if applied to said inlet, maintain said shockwave for all values of comburant flow-rate within predetermined limits. In situations wherein the pressure downstream of tuyere 2 remains substantially constant, a regulated reference pressure is applied to one side of a diaphragm 11 the other side of which is subjected to the tuyere inlet-pressure. Diaphragm 11 thus moves body 6 in response to inlet pressure changes. In situations wherein the downstream pressure varies with comburant flowrate, the reference pressure applied to diaphragm 11 is the sum of the pressure adjacent the outlet of nozzle 5, applied via conduit 14, and a predetermined differential pressure applied by a spring 15 and adjusted by a control 16. In alternative embodiments, a coupling rod 7 may be replaced by electromechanical or pneumatic means; e.g. the difference between the two pressures may give rise to an electrical signal activating a servo-mechanism. The rod 7 and body 6 may be cooled by a circulating cooling fluid or by contact with one end of a thermal conductor cooled at its other end by vapourization of a liquid.
