Abstract
1367181 Purifying I C engine exhaust gases FRIEDRICH BOYSEN 28 July 1972 [28 July 1971 8 Jan 1972] 35350/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A pipe duct, especially for a thermal reactor in I. C. engines comprises an inner pipe 20 subdivided into sections 20a, 21a, 22a sliding in or on one another, an outer continuous sleeve 23 connected in a fluid tight manner to the inner pipe end sections as at 24a and 25a, and thermal insulation between the inner pipe and the sleeve. The end 30 of one pipe section may slide freely in an enlarged end 28 of the adjacent pipe section preferably in the direction of flow X of the medium in the inner pipe. Alternatively the end of the upstream pipe may be double wall so as to slide over the end of the adjacent downstream section Fig. 14 (not shown) or a sliding ring e.g. a piston ring may be arranged between the pipe ends to form a seal. A pressure balancing chamber 549 may be provided adjacent the sliding joint of the inner pipe sections. The insulation material may be arranged in two layers, an inner layer of more solid consistency and an outer layer of less solid consistency Fig. 2 (not shown). Alternatively the more solid consistency insulation material can be arranged only around the joints of the inner pipe sections to aid sealing of these joints Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). A heat resistant sheet e.g. of nickel alloy may-be arranged between the inner pipe and the insulation or the insulation may be encased in such a sheet Fig. 5 (not shown). The outer sleeve may be received to the inner pipe by welding end caps 24, 25 thereto or they may be joined by flanges Figs. 7, 8 (not shown) for attachment of the pipe to other fittings &c. The invention can be adapted for pipe bends as shown in Fig. 6 and to exhaust manifold fittings Figs. 10 and 15, and Figs. 7, 9, 18 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 10 separate pipe sections 442a, 441a, 441b, connect with the main inner pipe section 422a in a slidable manner. The pipe section 422a can be divided into separate passages by partition 439 Figs. 11, 13 (not shown), show further details. In Fig. 15 one end of inner pipe section 614 bears against an abutment 621 and the other end is slidable on adjacent section 615 by means of a sliding piston type ring 617, 618. In this embodiment a cooling zone 625 is arranged after the insulated reactor zone. Air is directed into the space between the inner pipe and the outer sleeve through openings 623 formed by scoops 624 and flows out through openings 627 in the sleeve. In the similar embodiment of Fig. 18 (not shown) the joint between inner pipe sections is arranged within the insulated section and again the inner pipe is divided into two passages for connection to separate exhaust outlets.
