Abstract

1367092 Preparation of halophenols IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 Jan 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 3937/71 Heading C2C [Also in Divison C3] Halophenols of the formula where X is a halogen atom, preferably F or Cl, and Q is -SO 2 - or -CO- may be prepared by Friedel-Crafts condensation of bis-(1-naphthyl) carbonate with 4-halophenyl sulphonyl (or carbonyl) halide in nitrobenzene using anhydrous ferric chloride, followed by alkaline hydrolysis and acidification. The alkali metal salt of the halophenol may be obtained by evaporating the solvents resulting from mixing the Friedel-Crafts reaction product with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide. In the example 1-(4- fluorobenzene sulphonyl)-4-hydroxy naphthalene and its potassium salt are prepared by the above methods.
