Abstract
1428404 Haloaromatic compounds IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 July 1973 [11 April 1972] 16604/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises a haloaromatic compound of the formula where Q is selected from hydrogen and -YOH (and alkali metal salt thereof) YX and (and alkali metal salt and bis-carbonate thereof) groups and where X are halogen atoms which may be the same or different and where Y is selected from -CO- and -SO 2 - and Y<SP>1</SP> is -SO 2 - and may be -CO- when Y is -SO 2 -. Polymeric materials are made by polycondensation of an alkali metal salt of a halophenol as defined above in which Q is a group of the Formula B above. In examples: potassium phenate is reacted with bis(4-fluorophenyl)sulphone to give 4(4-fluorophenylsulphonyl)diphenyl ether and 4-(phenyl oxyphenyl)sulphone and the former product reacted with bis(4-chlorosulphonyl phenyl) carbonate to give the coresponding carbonate which is hydrolysed to give a product of formula which is converted to the potassium salt and polymerized by heating (1) and the potassium salt of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid is heated with bis (4-fluorophenyl) ketone to obtain [4-(4- fluoro-benzoyl)phenoxy] benzoic acid which is converted to the corresponding acid chloride by reaction with thionyl chloride.
