Abstract

1366694 Transport systems JAPANESE NATIONAL RAILWAYS 15 Oct 1971 [17 Oct 1970] 48135/71 Heading B7L A transportation system comprises freightcarrying vehicles 1<SP>11</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> running along a track in a tube T, the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the vehicles at their end section to the cross-sectional area of the tube interior being such that when the speed of one vehicle, e.g. 1<SP>11</SP> differs from that of an adjacent vehicle, e.g. 211, the air column 8 between these vehicles 1<SP>11</SP> and 2<SP>11</SP> is compressed or expanded and the resultant change in pressure tends to bring the speeds of the vehicles 1<SP>11</SP> and 2<SP>11</SP> into conformity. This ratio should be high, preferably above 0À9. The vehicles may be driven by linear induction motors comprising primary windings (15), Figs. 2(b) and 2(c) (not shown), attached to the tube T and a reaction plate 14 attached to the longitudinal median of the bottom of each vehicle. At least one vehicle 2<SP>11</SP> may have a load carrying compartment bounded at each end of the vehicle by upstanding end plates 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. The vehicles may have wheels 16 to run on rails (R) at both sides of the vehicles. The individual vehicles may be replaced by units each consisting of a group of vehicles coupled together.
