Abstract

1366597 Road-engaging brakes; wheel-tread-engaging brakes H PILLING 23 July 1973 [6 April 1973] 16464/73 Heading F2E An emergency or parking brake assembly including road-engaging pads P<SP>2</SP>, P<SP>3</SP>, preferably having treaded surfaces similar to those of tyres, and a wheel-tread-engaging shoe E (fitted with a brake pad, not shown), includes also hinged plates H<SP>2</SP>, H<SP>3</SP>, and hydraulic or spring pressure units J<SP>1</SP>, J<SP>2</SP>, the assembly being hinged at S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>4</SP>, S<SP>6</SP> to a member H<SP>1</SP> secured to a plate M which is slid into channels formed in opposing vertical faces of a longitudinally extending inverted channel member; the channel member is secured under one side of the vehicle body over the wheel tracks, and the arrangement is repeated on the other side of the vehicle. A torsion spring T at hinge S<SP>2</SP> applies pressure on the trailing edge of plate H<SP>4</SP>. The assembly is lowered into the applied position shown or retracted into the channel member by a handle R, Fig. 6, fulcrummed at R<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 2 and 6, and linked at R<SP>2</SP> to the pressure units J<SP>1</SP>, J<SP>2</SP>. The handle R is located at position 4 of quadrant Z for emergency application, or locked at position 5, as shown in Fig. 6, for parking. For full retraction it is moved to position Z<SP>1</SP>. A triangular guard with a brush underneath may be fitted to extend to the right of pad P<SP>3</SP> to protect both pads from damage due to grit, ice, hail, &c.
