Abstract
1366450 Reactors ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE 28 Dec 1972 [7 Jan 1972] 59875/72 Heading G6C In a sodium-cooled fast reactor, the core assemblies 17, 17a are supported between a diagrid 7 and a core lid 25. Support stools 11 extend through apertures 12 in a bottom support grid 4 and are locked in position by mounting nuts 14 on threaded end portions 13 of the stools, while their opposite ends traverse a plate 8 of the diagrid and are locked with respect thereto by means of annular nuts 16. Each core assembly 17, 17a comprises a metallic casing 18 formed with a lower end-fitting 19 of smaller cross-sectional area which penetrates into a corresponding support stool 11. Sodium coolant enters the space between the diagrid plate 8 and the support grid 4 via an aperture 6 in the pressure vessel 2 and passes into the support stools 11 through slots 21 and then flows upwardly into the core assemblies 17, 17a. The latter include canned fuel pins 22 containing either a fissile or a fertile material. The outer core assemblies may alternatively comprise reflector assemblies surrounded by neutronabsorbing assemblies. The upper end of each casing 18 comprises a head 23 which has an axial opening for the escape of coolant and which terminates in a conical bearing surface 24. Coolant outlets 29 are positioned in the core lid 25 so as to be exactly opposite the core assemblies, each outlet 29 being formed at its lower end with a conical bearing surface 30 capable of co-operating with the bearing surface 24 of the corresponding core assembly, The core lid 25 is supported by means of an annular flange 26 resting on a shoulder 10 of a cylindrical sidewall of the diagrid 7, being guided with respect to the latter by a positioning sleeve 27. Only two core assemblies are shown, assembly 17 being in the inoperative position as during reactor shut-down, while the assembly 17a is in. the operative position in which it is lifted by the coolant pressure so that its bearing surface 24 engages the corresponding bearing surface 30 in the lid 25, whereby the assembly 17a is axially locked.
