Abstract

1366289 Machining a workpiece KRAFTWERK UNION AG 20 July 1973 [7 Nov 1972] 34795/73 Heading B3L A method of accurately machining a workpiece comprises, providing magnetic markings at predetermined points on a surface of the workpieee, which points correspond to the points of the workpiece which are to be machined, detecting the positions of the magnetic markings and machining the workpiece in dependence on the detected positions of the magnetic markings. To broach blade root slots 2 in an outer compressor ring 1 an annular strip 4 of magnetizable material is fixed to the ring and then magnetized to provide the magnetic markings. During machining the magnetic markings are detected by a magnetic probe provided on a machine tool and coupled to a null balance indicating device. The strip may have the magnetic markings thereon before application to the workpiece. Alternatively plate-shaped or disc-shaped pieces of magnetic material may be sunk into the peripheral surface of the workpiece and then the magnetic markings arranged on these pieces.
