Abstract

1366116 Regenerators PILKINGTON BROS Ltd and J F E CHOLERTON 18 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 11130/71 Heading F4K In a regenerator comprising two interconnected regenerator chambers 10, 11 for successively cooling exhaust or waste gases discharged from a glass furnace at a temperature above 1500‹ C., the upstream chamber 11 contains a plurality of parallel vertical plates 15 spaced apart to define horizontal channels 16 for the passage of exhaust gases between an inlet port 12 and an outlet port 14. The exhaust gases leaving outlet port 14 thereafter pass downwardly through a checkerwork 17 in the downstream chamber 10 to finally leave through an outlet 18. Incoming gas is passed through the regenerator in a reverse direction at a later stage to take up heat therefrom. A row of normally closed apertures 20 are provided beneath the port 12 to permit periodic removal of shelling and dross from the chamber 11. Access to the interior of the chamber 11 is also provided to permit withdrawal and replacement of the walls 15 when necessary. The checkerwork 17 is formed of magnesite bricks while the walls 15 of the upstream chamber 11 are formed of mullite, tabular alumina, fusion cast zircon, fusion cast magnesite, high strength magnesite or fused grain magnesite. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the inlet and outlet ports 12 and 14 are disposed to permit the exhaust gases to pass upwardly through the upstream chamber 11.
