Abstract

1366098 7 - [D - (α - Amino - α - phenylacetamido)]-3-substituted cephalosporins BRISTOLMYERS CO 13 Sept 1971 [14 Sept 1970 (2) 23 Nov 1970] 42613/71 Heading C2A The invention comprises compounds which have the Formula I wherein A is a group of formula or having the D-configuration in the side chain, and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. A process for the preparation of these compounds comprises reacting a compound of Formula II or a salt or ester thereof with an acid having the Formula III wherein B represents a blocking group or its functional equivalent as an acylating agent for a primary amino group, and thereafter removing the blocking group. Suitable blocking groups include t-butoxy-carbonyl, carbobenzyloxy, 2- hydroxy-1-naphthcarbonyl and trichloroethoxycarbonyl (removable by formic acid, catalytic hydrogenation, acid hydrolysis and zinc dust in glacial acetic acid respectively). A pharmaceutical composition comprises a compound of Formula I above or salt thereof, together with a carrier or excipient. A method of treating mammals other than human beings, to cure them of diseases caused by Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria comprises administering to the mammal an effective amount of a compound of Formula I or a salt thereof or the above-mentioned pharmaceutical composition.
