Abstract

1365689 Carboxylic acids by fermentation T HASEGAWA CO Ltd 23 Dec 1971 [26 Dec 1970 31 Aug 1971] 60151/71 Heading C2C Straight-chain dicarboxylic acid, an omegahydroxy fatty acid, and an (omega-1)-keto fatty acid are prepared simultaneously by aerobic culture of an n-paraffin assimilating strain of genus Corynebacterium in a medium comprising an n-paraffin with at least 10 C., a nitrogen source and a mineral. The medium may also include acrylic acid or a salt thereof or an anion exchange resin. Corynebacterium dioxydans nov. sp., Corynebacterium hydrocarboxydans nov. sp. are used in examples and hydrocarbons may be n-decane, and n-dodecane to n-eicosane. Conventional nitrogen sources, phosphates, acid salts of magnesium, iron, manganese, calcium, copper, zinc, molybdenum and boron are mentioned together with anion exchange resins. The crude acids formed may be esterified, and saponified to give pure acids. Undecan-1,11- dicarboxylic, 13-hydroxytridecanoic and 12- ketotridecanoic acids; hexadecan 1,16 - dicarboxylic, 18-hydroxystearic, and 17-ketostearic acids; tridecan-1,13-dicarboxylic, 15- hydroxypentadecanoic and 14-ketopentadecanoic acids; and tridecan-1,13- and tetradecan-1,- 14-dicarboxylic, 15-hydroxypentadecanoic and 16-hydroxypalmitic and 14-ketopentadecanoic and 15-ketopalmitic acids are prepared in examples.
