Abstract

1365585 Sewing LIGHTNING FASTENERS Ltd 22 Dec 1972 [26 Jan 1972] 3687/72 Heading DIG [Also in Division E2] Sliding clasp fastener chain 13 is sewn to garment material positioned on the stringer by a sewing machine having a tool 27, for forming a bottom end stop on the fastener, disposed at the inlet side of the sewing zone, chain cutting tools 41-43 disposed at the outlet side of the zone and means to operate the tools. The chains 13, with a previously formed stop at its leading end, is fed beneath guide 36 and stop forming anvil 38 to the zone, while the garment panels (10, Fig. 1 not shown) are fed over guide 36 and each side of guide fin 37, one panel underlying roller 34. The work is fed and sewn by twin needles 15 until the trailing edge of a panel (10) passes roller 34 which falls to actuate switch 30 which in this embodiment actuates a timer 45 to stop the machine and operates tool 27 to fuse fastener elements of the chain to form an end stop. Sewing is then resumed until cutter 42, 43 can be operated by manual switches 44 to sever the panels and sewn chains from the chain length. In another embodiment (Fig. 4 not shown) an air sensor (51) replaces roller 34 and the stop tools (58-61) are mounted on a swingable arm (53) so that sewing and feeding may proceed during element fusing. The stop tool may be actuated by a pneumatic piston and cylinder, as shown, or by an electric solenoid. A staple type stop may be provided.
