Abstract

1365581 Polymeric additives for polyvinyl Chloride ROHM GmbH 13 Jan 1972 [15 Jan 1971] 1699/72 Heading C3P Additives for polyvinyl chloride moulding materials comprise an emulsion copolymer containing 70-95% by weight of units of methyl methacrylate and 5-30% by weight of at least one comonomer which, when polymerized alone, forms a " soft " homopolymer (i.e. has a Tg below 20‹ C.), the copolymer being in the form of a granulate whose granules consist of loosely aggregated fine particles. (The granules are distinguished from conventional bead polymer particles and are characterized by having a crumbly structure and being friable.) Suitable comonomers are esters of acrylic acid, and also methacrylate esters of alcohols having at least 4 carbon atoms; acrylates of C 1 to C 4 alcohols are preferred, particularly ethyl acrylate. The copolymer granulate is obtained by dehydrating an aqueous dispersion of the emulsion copolymer at a temperature such that no fusing or sintering of the copolymer particles occurs. Dehydration can be effected by evaporating the dispersion, e.g. in a thin layer, in a drying oven or on a roller, or preferably by spray-drying; dehydration can also be achieved by coagulating the dispersion, e.g. by electrolyte addition, and filtering off the coagulate. The copolymer additive of the invention is generally added to bulk, suspension or emulsion P.V.C. in an amount of 0À5-10% by weight (based on the total amount of P.V.C. and additive) to provide a moulding material. Fillers, stabilizers, lubricants and/or dyes may also be included.
