Abstract
1365496 Chlorine production DOW CHEMICAL CO 6 Dec 1971 56554/71 Heading C7B A continuous process for producing chlorine comprises passing separate anolyte and catholyte streams through anode and cathode compartments A and C of an electrolytic diaphragm cell 10, the anolyte and catholyte containing aqueous HCl and a polyvalent metal chloride. Chlorine is evolved at the anode 12 and the valency of the polyvalent metal chloride is reduced at the cathode 11. The current density is up to one amp/sq in. The polyvalent metal chloride may be copper chloride, iron chloride or chromium chloride. The diaphragm 13 may be polypropylene, copolymers of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile, or polyvinyl chloride. The composition of the anolyte and catholyte may be 2M Cucl 2 and from 3-8M HCL. The chlorine is removed at degassing unit 15. The anolyte then passes through heat exchanger 22 and absorber 16 where HCl is replenished. The anolyte is returned to the cell via filter 23. The catholyte is passed through heat exchanger 22 to an oxidizer 19 where it is contacted with an oxidizing atmosphere to reoxidize the polyvalent metal chloride. The oxidizing atmosphere may comprise an oxygen or chlorine containing gas. The reoxidized catholyte is then returned to the cell via filter 23.
